WHAT IS THE LOKOJA DIALOGUES AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Our work transforms community-defined challenges into opportunities. By surfacing the lived realities of farmers, herders, women, and local leaders, we position them to be taken up by policymakers, investors, and partners.

This continuous action programme generates home-grown solutions for water security and for the wider systems and value chains, i.e. food, energy, and conservation.

The stakes could not be higher. Water underpins every aspect of society, yet many of Nigeria’s river basins and aquifers are already used beyond sustainable limits. The economic implications are stark.

Reversing water scarcity could boost Nigeria’s growth by up to six percent each year. The associated peace dividend — through reduced farmer–herder conflict, could unlock as much as $13.7 billion annually. And without urgent change, unsafe water and poor sanitation will continue costing Nigeria at least 1.3 percent of GDP each year, while water-linked malnutrition and stunting suppress long-term productivity by up to 11 percent.

OUR VISION

A Nigeria where every community has equitable access to water and the power to shape sustainable, locally anchored solutions resulting in a safer and more secure future.

OUR MISSION

Lokoja Dialogues exists to surface community-defined challenges and connect them to policy, partnership, and investment pathways that drive sustainable water solutions and break the cycle of

climate-driven poverty.

Water sits at the heart of Nigeria’s development story. It underpins the country’s food supply, energy systems, ecosystems, and even its national security. Yet these foundations are under strain. Rapid population growth, weak infrastructure, and the rising pressures of climate change are stretching our water systems and the associated value chains to breaking point.

OUR APPROACH

Our approach connects solution-finding and implementation directly to people, using bottom-up structures that link local governments, states, national agencies, and even cross-border partners. We work through existing networks -  from women’s groups to faith-based organisations, ensuring that ownership and mobilisation remain in local hands. This is the key to sustainability, scale and impact.
