LOKOJA DIALOGUES EDUCATION

FOR OUR CHILDREN

Our children’s programme is designed on the principle of all join in. Since 2019 children in states across Nigeria have participated in the “My Story of Water” project which is delivered over the course of one year, in schools, in communities and in homes, by teachers, community educators and caregivers. The series of 8 interactive “My Story of Water” worksheets are translated into Hausa, Yoruba and English.

Why is water the central theme of this initiative?

Because water underpins everything: food production, energy, livelihoods, health, and security. Without water, communities cannot thrive.

Why was Lokoja chosen as the symbolic anchor for the programme?

Lokoja sits at Nigeria’s great confluence and birthplace of our great nation. It represents connection - of rivers, communities, ideas, and the financing pathways needed to turn solutions into real impact nationwide.

What specific development gaps is LD trying to address?

Fragmented water governance, underfunded local water solutions, the disconnect between community realities and national policy, and the disproportionate burden placed on women and children when water systems fail.

What safeguards ensure that community voices are not overshadowed?

LD works through trusted community groups including women’s associations, traditional leaders, and youth advocates to ensure ownership stays in community hands.

Why was the LD launch event hosted by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning?

Because water resilience is central to Nigeria’s development planning and budgeting cycle, and LD feeds directly into those priorities.

What is the role of the Policy Working Group?

It ensures that community-defined challenges are heard at the highest levels of policymaking and integrated into national development frameworks.

How can individuals or organisations support Lokoja Dialogues?

By offering technical expertise, partnering on research, funding community-led solutions, or supporting LD’s operational and engagement work.

What should Nigerians expect in the next 12–18 months?

Community listening sessions, working group convenings, the first set of investment-ready solutions, and pilots in selected communities.
